What Does Reflective Tape Do on Hi-Vis Workwear?
Retroreflective material is designed to return light toward its source. On high-visibility clothing, this helps make the wearer more conspicuous when illuminated by vehicle headlights or other light sources in low-light and night-time conditions.
Reflective tape should not be evaluated in isolation. The performance of the finished garment also depends on material placement, garment design, fluorescent background material and the amount of visible material.
Reflective Tape vs Fluorescent Material: What Is the Difference?
Fluorescent background material is mainly intended to improve daytime conspicuity, while retroreflective material is particularly important when the garment is illuminated in darker conditions.

What Does EN ISO 20471 Consider?
ISO 20471 includes performance requirements for colour and retroreflection, together with requirements concerning minimum material areas and placement on protective clothing.

1. Retroreflective performance
Ask what performance standard or test method applies to the reflective material and request supporting documentation where required. Visual appearance alone is not enough to evaluate performance.
2. Compatibility with the garment
Different garment constructions, fabrics and production methods may require different reflective material solutions. Buyers should confirm that the selected tape is appropriate for the intended vest, jacket, shirt, trouser or other workwear product.
3. Durability after care and use
Reflective performance can be affected by washing, abrasion, flexing and other forms of exposure. The required care cycle and end-use environment should therefore be considered before bulk production.
4. Placement on the finished garment
Reflective tape placement is part of the garment design. Pockets, closures, seams and other construction details can affect the available visible area and the continuity of the reflective layout.
5. Logos and customization
Printing, branding, badges and other OEM customization can cover fluorescent or reflective areas. Buyers should review the final customized artwork and garment layout before approving mass production.
6. Supplier documentation and consistency
For repeat and bulk orders, confirm the tape specification, approved sample and documentation used for production. Material substitutions should not be made without buyer approval when they may affect the required specification.

One common mistake is comparing suppliers only by tape brightness in photos. Camera exposure, lighting and image processing can make products appear brighter or darker than they perform in standardized testing.
Another mistake is approving reflective tape separately from the garment. Compliance and practical performance depend on the complete garment configuration, including placement, visible areas and customization.
Buyers should also avoid assuming that one tape specification is suitable for every garment. A lightweight vest, softshell jacket and industrial workwear garment may involve different materials, construction methods and care requirements.
